By: Mikey Martin
Aug 28, 2015

At 18.35 Derrynane Inshore Rescue was tasked by Valentia Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre to a reported Rib drifting near Sneem with four on board with engine problems.

Derrynane Inshore Rescue was mobile at 18.57 and proceeded with 4 crew members down the kenmare bay making 40+ knots due to good weather conditions. The Crew here Jerry Clifford (Helm), Mikey Martin (Communications), Mike Turner and Jonathon Hughes.

The 3 metre Rib with 4 person on board was located. The ribs passengers were brought on board our Aghamore 2 lifeboat and Crewman Mikey Martin went onto the rib to attempt to restart it. The ribs owner said they ran out of petrol but this was not the case. There was a simple air lock in the fuel line. This is a very simple problem which all boaters should know about. The boat was driven back to oyster bed pier and handed back to the owners. A lecture was given to the owners on the importance of doing a powerboat course and understanding basic troubleshooting. This callout was a waste of our resources due to inexperienced boaters.

Advice:  If your planning a long trip by sea it’s worth downloading the Safe trx app from the Irish Sailing Association.
